Personality & Traits
General Overview | Cassandra "Cass" Blackburn was born on the remote Falkland Islands in the South Atlantic. She is naturally intelligent with an eye for detail, is fiercely independent, and is successful academically. With a small population at home and little in local interests, she decided on a Starfleet career to escape boredom. She studied Interstellar Military History at Tokyo University, graduating with a first. Initially, she considered a career in Starfleet as a fleet officer, but was convinced to join the Starfleet Marines by her recruitment officer. She performed well in training, specialising in logistics. Once commissioned as a Second Lieutenant, she applied for the accelerated promotion scheme where she was accepted, being pushed quickly up the ranks and afforded additional training, leading to her first command as the Detachment Commander on the newly commissioned USS Redemption. On board, she built a reputation for being knowledgeable, somewhat quiet and by-the-book, although her temper occasionally showed itself. Her lack of experience led to some negative comment from her fellow officers; however she performed well during the early missions of the Redemption. During this stage of service she was prone to take criticism to heart and overly worry, however she never expressed this publically. She formed a good friendship with several officers, especially Lucy Inverness. Whilst in Tokyo and in her first years of training, she formed a relationship with Joe Fursman, a security officer serving on board the USS Odyssey. After the death of his parents, Fursman terminated the relationship without explanation. Although upset, Cassandra moved on with her life. Fursman went onto join the rebellious Sixth Fleet and worked his way up to the head of intelligence, where he made contact with Cassandra with a view of using her to gain access to Starfleet information. This caused Starfleet Intelligence, through their capable operative Jon Marshall, to take an interest in her. Due to the influence of Jon Marshall on Lieutenant Commander Rhyan, Blackburn led the mission on Thorlarus III which led to her capture by Fursman. She was held for a month and subjected to aggressive interrogation, including mental conditioning. She managed to escape and return to Earth, but the damage had been done. Unable to cope with the physical and mental injury caused to her by her former partner, she fell into despair and looked to alcohol as an escape. Posted to the Marine base on Luna, she refused any help or treatment. She became hostile to her peers and career, gaining a reputation for instability, abruptness, and unchecked aggression. Blackburn linked leaving Starfleet with leaving her pain behind. She tried unsuccessfully to resign, however her link to Fursman meant that her request was denied. She was taken, against her will, on the mission to recover the Redemption from the Sixth Fleet, where she made several attempts to go AWOL. Shortly afterward, she testified at Commander Rhyan's trial. Holding mainly Rhyan responsible for what happened at Thorlarus III, she tried her best to destroy Rhyan in the dock. After Rhyan's acquittal, Blackburn was leaked a report from Starfleet Medical that recommended she be the subject of a court order to force treatment on her. Fearing she would lose her personality as a side effect, she went on the run for six months and an arrest warrant was issued. |
