Personality & Traits
General Overview | Throughout school Ha'Kir always maintained high marks in all of his subjects. He consistently demonstrated a talent for conceptual thinking and intuitive knowledge of military tactics. His interest in Dominion War-era technology and tactical assets led to his application and acceptance into Starfleet in its Engineering Officer tract. |
|
Strengths & Weaknesses | As a result of his Betazoid heritage, Ha'Kir possesses limited telepathy capability. However, because he is only half Betazed, the extent of his abilities are limited to requiring physical contact before he can form any connection with an individual. | |
Ambitions | Ha'Kir has always envisioned himself becoming a Starfleet Captain or a Senior member of the Trill Home Guard like his father, Vice Primar Marvun Kahlim. |
History
Personal History | Ha'Kir's earliest memory as a child was watching Dominion forces invading and conquering his home planet of Betazed. Ha'Kir's father, a senior member of the Trill Homeworld Government, was on Earth at the time of the invasion, leaving Ha'Kir and his family trapped behind enemy lines. The invasion was short, but devastating as a result of the planet's half a century old orbital defense system. Ha'Kir and his family were able to escape the invasion and survive in the series of evacuation facilities hidden throughout the planet. Ha'Kir called the series of bunker facilities home for almost 6 months before Starfleet was able to wrestle control back from the Dominion invaders and re-institute Starfleet government and military assets. Ha'Kir's father served within the Trill Home Guard, a traditional paramilitary organization that maintained security for the Trill Homeworld. Eventually, Ha'Kir's father rose to the rank of Vice Primar over the entire Trill Home Guard. It was during his temporary assignment to Betazed that he met Ha'Kir's mother and began their family. After Betazed was liberated from the Dominion, Ha'Kir's father moved the family to Trill which was considered well outside any possible Dominion attack. Like most Trill in positions of leadership, Ha'Kir wished to become a joined Trill. Only a small percentage of Trills were able to become joined with symbionts. Hosts do not become joined until their early to mid 20s to give the host time to develop and mature. They have to be old enough to make an informed decision about whether they really want to be joined. Five thousand candidates qualify for the Trill initiate training program each year, but only 300 symbionts are available on average. Trill initiates undergo training with a field docent. All joined Trill serve as a Field Docent at one time or another. A bad recommendation from their field docent can end an initiate's hopes of receiving a symbiont. Unfortunately, Ha'Kir had passed all academic and preliminary evaluations; however he failed to move on to the next level of consideration due to his mixed heritage. The Trill Symbiont Commission considered Ha'Kir to be a qualified individual from a distinguished family; however, his mixed-race background was considered to be too much of a risk for Joining. Because Trills were not naturally telepathic, there was a concern that Ha'Kir's telepathic capability would have an adverse affect on the symbiont. As a result, Ha'Kir was removed from the program. The failure devastated Ha'Kir. He had worked his entire young life to qualify for the Initiate. The failure to be joined caused him to question his own competence as an adult and whether he would be capable of doing anything else of value. As a result of Ha'Kar's high academic scores, he was accepted into Starfleet Academy without any hindrance. While most in the Federation were not intimately aware of Trill society nor the stigma of being rejected for a symbiont, Hi'Kar always felt a need to out-perform all of his classmates and prove himself "worthy" of being an officer. Such a determination led him to the top of his class; however, it did not make him many friends within his cohort. Ha'Kir's focus in the Academy was as a traditional Engineer. His cataclysmic experience during the Battle Betazed led a permanent impression on him. He found a particular interest in studying the tactical successes and failure that Starfleet technology played during the Dominion War. Of particular interest was the deployment of orbital defense weapon platforms. This academic interest led to Ha'Kir focusing his graduate dissertation on the tactical failures of such weapon platforms and how they were a significant cause of Betazed's fall. In 2386, Ha'Kir received his degree in Engineering with a specialty on fixed-position weapon systems. |
