Star Fleet Ranks

Flag Officer Ranks:
Fleet Admiral - O11 - Chief command officer overseeing all of Star Fleet, only active during war time. Only one Fleet Admiral is allowed to serve at any one time.
Admiral - O10 - Highest rank an officer can achieve during peace time. Oversees the operations of one of Star Fleet's departments. Assists the Fleet Admiral, in times of war, with supervising and organizing the assets and personnel in their department.
Vice-Admiral - O9 - High ranking flag officer, can be tasked with overseeing operations of a department of Star Fleet or may be tasked as Deputy Chief of a Department under an Admiral. Vice-Admirals may also command task groups as a field commander.
Rear Admiral - O8 - Second Junior of the flag officers, typically tasked with field operations and may take command of task forces in the field in lieu of higher ranking flag officers.
Commodore - O7 - Most junior of the flag officers. Commodores are typically tasked with commanding large instantiations such as star bases or ground installations and oversee field organizational needs for task forces and other Star Fleet assets.
Field Officer Ranks:
Captain - O6 - Captains can be tasked as Commanding Officers of ships and stationary installations. Captains are typically the highest ranking officer in field command roles of individual assets, i.e. starships.
Commander - O5 - Commanders can serve as Executive Officers on starbases and starships, or as a departmental head on a starbase. Commanders are typically tasked with high level contact with subordinate officers and senior nco's under their command and assist their commanding officers as mediators allowing the CO to focus on the larger picture uninterrupted.
Lieutenant Commander - O4 - Lieutenant Commanders typically serve as a departmental head on larger ships. Service in an organizational and leadership role to junior officers and ensuring that their department runs smoothly.
Lieutenant - O3 - Lieutenants typically serve as assistant department heads. Acting much like a departmental executive officer and assisting their direct supervisor with instruction and leadership of their assigned tasks.
Lieutenant JG - O2 - Lieutenant JG's are seasoned, senior staff assigned to departments. They are the ones that operate and work with the senior NCO's along with Ensigns to carry out the mission of their assigned department.
Ensign - O1 - Ensigns are new officers fresh out of the Academy. They are typically assigned to departments as low level supervisors to lead and carry out the departments assigned tasks and coordinate and work with the NCO's of that department.
