Mission:
Empty Creche
Location: Auxillary Sickbay
Timeline: ED 1: 0300
ON:
Doctor Kolmak approached an injured ensign that was brought in a few seconds ago. "What's going on?" He immediately went to work on the unconscious, young man, with electrical burns on his right side from the front of armpit down to his hip.
"It happened in engineering, a conduit exploded," a nurse explained.
"Let's get some scans on this side. Need to know how the liver is and what other damage this has done before I can fix it," he said, not to anybody particular.
Gabe was making the rounds of the ship, checking in on all the decks as was normal when he took over a new command. So far he was impressed, the Redemption was in good order and he hadn't found much he wanted to change, but then again he hadn't gotten to the bottom deck yet. He reached the auxiliary sickbay and almost didn't enter but his feet turned and he paused half a heartbeat to let the door part before continuing forward. As a doctor himself he took a special interest in the medical facilities of the Excalibur class ship which rivaled most starbases. There were very few starship designs that incorporated a secondary sickbay, then again extra medical facilities were a good thing given the mission of the Excaliburs. It was hard to pin down exactly what the Excalibur class ships mission was due to the way it was designed. It was part forward command and control, part carrier and part battleship. Designed to project the Federation's power where ever she went. He figured the extra medical bays probably fell under the command and control support role the Redemption would play in fleet engagements. He was pulled from his musing as he entered the sickbay fully and watched a Lieutenant working on what appeared to be a burned Ensign. He moved forward to stand just over the other man's shoulder and look down at the tricorder and the injuries of the Ensign.
Gabe grunted softly as he read the readout and commented to himself. "Doesn't look to be too badly injured lad, a little dermal regeneration a few scars and your back on your feet." Gabe grinned like the Klingon he was as he lowered his voice to a whisper and leaned in like a conspirator when he spoke to the Ensign again "And ladies like scars."
Mikail straightened from bending over, feeling a slight pain that reminded him that he shouldn't have done that. "Do you mind," his frustration came out, wondering who was running the show. He turned to look at a Klingon in a red command uniform. He doubled take on the rank pins on his collar. "Sir? I do not recognize you. What happened to our Captain? Did I miss something here?"
Gabe grinned as winningly as his years on the ranch in East Texas could have taught him. "Yes, there have been a few changes. Captain Ashcart is now Admiral Ashcart and on his way back to Star Fleet Command. I am now the new commander of the Redemption, you'll have to excuse me though, I'm still a medical doctor and my professional curiosity gets the better of me sometimes. Forgive me to interrupting your work, old habits die hard." the deep Texas twang of his accent juxtaposed over the very Klingon features caused most people a bit of confusion he had learned to expect.
Two strange accents in the air, A nurse shook her head. "Sorry for the interruption. I received the results on the blood work and the scan," she pointed the PADD for Doctor Kolmak to take it.
"Back to Star Fleet Command?" He received the PADD and glanced at it for a minute before looking up at the Klingon. "It is nice to know we have an extra pair of hands if we ever run into the chaos of patients. I'm Doctor Mikail Kolmak, assistant chief medical officer." Mikail ordered the nurse to get the dermal regeneration and treat the patient.
Gabe nodded. "If you need me I'm here, provided I'm not on the bridge trying to keep us all from going boom. Though my specialty is emergency medicine. I was a marine medic during the war so meatball surgery is what I'm most comfortable with." Gabe extended a hand to the other doctor "How close do you work with the Marine detachment?"
The Russian doctor chuckled. "Same boat. My second position is a surgeon and my foremost position is emergency medicine." He accepted the handshake. "I've been training a very few marines in first aid, but I have one man who has a high interest in becoming a combat medic. Been working with him for a few weeks." He glanced at the nurse sealing up the man's burns and giving him special care. "How did you end up being interested in medicine? I've never heard of any Klingons would take up this position."
Gabe grinned "Good, I would like you to come up with a plan to help rotate the combat medics the detachment has through the star fleet advanced life-saving courses. I know when I was a medic it helped greatly that the CMO on the ship we were attached to took me under his wing and showed me some more advanced techniques. Don't limit it to just the medics if any of the other regular grunts wants a quick course I'd like you to help them out. I have a bad feeling that this ship is going to see more than it's fair share of action." he paused and pondered the question he'd heard all his life. "Well your right most Klingons ain't that interested in learning how to patch a person up, but then again I ain't your normal Klingon. I grew up on a ranch in East Texas, it was a working ranch. My parents worked us pretty hard which helped when I started to go through the change. When that wasn't enough we would go hunting to feed my bloodlust. After I learned to control it I started to figure out that I enjoyed tending the animals from birthing a calf to helping to heal a mare. I had a knack for the healing arts. I graduated early, went to college and studied premed then started my first year of medical school when the war broke out. From there I dropped out of Washington and Lee and signed up as a grunt in the Marines. They found out about my medical background and put in in the medic courses. Once I graduated I was assigned to a forward marine detachment. After the war, I went back to medical school and joined Star Fleet."
"That's a lot of achievements coming from a Klingon yourself. I'm from Russia. I went to medical school after joining the academy and took a specialty in surgery for 6 months. This is the third ship I'm serving. Welcome aboard, Captain. I have a feeling that I'm going to enjoy your company. I will look into the marine detachment. Have you met with our Chief Medical Officer, Doctor Keisha Afton?"
He winced slightly "Can't say as I have and I'm not overly sanguine about that meeting. From what I hear she's married to the Admiral and I don't want to go poking my big forehead into her office for a few days."
"True. I understand...," Mikail nodded.
"Sir, the treatment on the patient is finished," a nurse interrupted him.
"Well, Captain, I better get back to work. I'm sure we will see each other again."
Barron nodded "Aye, that you better Doctor, I'll be seeing you around." he looked at the ensign on the table and grinned wickedly "Better keep a bat around to beat all the adoring ladies off of you Ensign." with that he spun on his heel and headed back out to continue his rounds before heading to a temporary quarters until the CMO moved out of his.
"Yes, sir." Doctor Kolmak watched him leave and turned back to the patient.
