Mission:
Empty Creche
Location: ED 1, 1030
Timeline: Sickbay
ON:
Nurse Reeves worked as a backup nurse covering for a sick nurse. He would have been spending more fun time in the holodeck if it hadn't been for Doctor Kolmak's call. His regular shift is the night shift in the secondary sickbay. This time, he was placed in the main sickbay, the bigger medical bay. He is not one to complain but has always stepped into work when he is needed. The tiredness was beginning to rob his energy and he realizes that the morning shift is when he sleeps. Micheal was beginning to feel like a zombie. Need coffee or sleep, he thought.
Grey looked at the Petty officer and nodded knowingly to him, he looked around the sickbay and saw there was only one patient and that patient was well under control. He motioned for the junior nco to come over and stand beside him. When Reeves made it over Grey lowered his voice and spoke quietly.
"Petty Officer, go get a cup of coffee from the replicator and go inventory the supply closet until the coffee is gone and those eyes of yours look like they can keep themselves open. If the Doctor calls for you I'll get you and let him know I assigned you to that duty for now."
"Yes, sir," Micheal said, slowly. "I spent a couple of hours my off duty in the holodeck before I came here." He went to order a caramel flavor coffee with a couple of creamers and extra sugar. He went back to the Chief nurse and whispered, "I have a question."
"The only stupid question is the one never asked." Grey said simply as he continued to work.
Micheal was too tired to chuckle if that came out as a joke or a statement. "When I was in the holodeck, I came upon old medicine that I don't have knowledge of. What is mor-phine?" He put the mug up to his lips and carefully took a couple of sips of the hot liquid. The caffeine appears to be stimulating his tired nerves.
Grey stiffened a little as the thought back to emergency medicine derived from plants. "If I remember correctly morphine was a narcotic pain reliever deployed to relieve moderate to severe pain. It was derived from plants, an opioid that could result in the death of overused. Second World War holos huh?" He asked with a grin.
"Yeah," he gave a scrunched-up face. "Metorapan would have been better. I wanted a challenge as a combat medic playing out the old years. The war was pathetic. I've enrolled in the medical corp set up by Doctor Kolmak." Since the coffee became warm instead of remaining hot, Micheal gulped the rest of the liquid down and held the empty mug.
"Given the limitations of the day morphine was a rather cutting-edge drug. We are talking several hundred years in the past." Grey paused "Doctor Kolmak is setting up a medical corps? For what purpose?" the elder nco asked confused.
"It's a new program that just started. I've always wanted to go back to school for a combat medic or a microbiologist. I wouldn't have to take a leave to do this on Earth," he rocked on his feet, feeling the excitement of a career change in the near future.
"They are attaching you to the away teams?" Grey asked, "Well it would make sense with the war on."
"Yes, I look forward to seeing and learning more with the away team, sir." Micheal went to dispose of the empty mug and came back. "I'm feeling more awake, now. I'm sure there will be a time that chaos will be knocking on the ship's door with patients. I'll go finish the supply room before I start to go downhill with tiredness."
Grey snorted "If your awake go make sure the surgical tools are clean and ready for use. I organized the closet at the begging of my shift."
"Yes, sir."
