Homecoming Part 4: Jon
Scene I: Science Laboratory 1, USS Redemption
Jon Marshall strode into the science laboratory with a confidence that was unbecoming of an officer of his rank. His confidence was carried through into his voice as he barked orders at the officers already working within the lab, demanding that everyone vacate the room irrespective of the project that they were working on. Some of the newer crewmembers remained in their seats for longer than those that knew Jon’s reputation; but with some coercion even they began to stand up and depart. Within sixty seconds or so the lab was entirely empty, silent except for the beeping of numerous diagnostic instruments left running in the background.
“Computer,” Jon announced firmly, lifting the cargo in his left hand and throwing it down onto the nearest workstation, “lock science lab one doors, authorisation Marshall Three-Five-Two Echo.”
Immediately Jon heard the familiar cycling of the locks on the heavy alloy doors, feeling secure that he would not be interrupted any time in the near future. His attention was now drawn to the sealed metal briefcase that he had brought to the lab, the unmistakable seal of Starfleet Science etched onto its surface. A simple thumbprint was all that was required to break the seals on the case and allow the Ensign to pop the clasps on either side and lift the top.
The contents of the case were a mixture of devices new and familiar to him. Several glass vials were inset against the case’s protective foam, LED lights flashing to warn him that a protective force-field was in effect around each of the tubes to keep their contents protected from inadvertent release. Jon was even reluctant to touch the vials, despite the extra protection, for fear of exposing himself to their contents. The fear was irrational, but not without good reason.
Jon’s eyes were slowly drawn to the item within the case that had brought him to the lab immediately upon his arrival to the Redemption. Inset on the other side of the case’s protective foam was a dismantled device – or more specifically, a damaged device – that he was all too familiar with. He had not seen the piece of Ee-inspired technology since his failed attempt to use Cadet Scott to apprehend the Ee Hybrid six months earlier. The memory made Jon choke slightly as he recalled the moment the Ee Hybrid took control over Scott’s mind on board the Nova.
He would never forget how close to death he had come that day.
And yet, here he was again. The device that had gone missing following the incident on board the Nova was now safely back in his possession. A fellow Intelligence operative had liberated it from the clutches of the Ee Research Institute where Lieutenant Commander Becker and his team had, thankfully, not been able to work out its intended use. The only person outside of Starfleet Intelligence who knew the device’s intended purpose was the same person that it was designed to be use on: Cadet Jody Scott.
For the present time Jon had the Cadet’s silence on the matter. A series of well-devised threats against Scott and his friends by Starfleet Intelligence had ensured that certain events on board the Nova were kept out of official Starfleet reports. If not for his importance in finding the Ee Hybrid Jon was sure that Intelligence probably would have found a more permanent solution to their problem with Scott. This was, of course, still an option if the need ever arose.
And as he caressed his neck, Jon found that he was hoping the need would arise.
Drawing his attention back to the problem at hand, the Ensign pulled the damaged components out of the case and immediately began to run diagnostics on them. It appeared that in the chaos that ensued Scott’s outburst on the Nova, the device had been forcibly removed from his head and broken into three distinct pieces. Jon’s task for the next few days would be to repair and reassemble the device before they arrived at Hadronus – Starfleet Intelligence’s current suspected location of the Ee Hybrid.
As he set to work on repairing the device he had created over a year ago, Jon thought once more about his mission at hand: recover the Ee Hybrid at all costs. Those were very wide mission parameters, the Ensign pondered, thinking once again of his dislike of Jody Scott and his downright contempt towards Rhyan. Perhaps he could make use of those parameters to take care of more than one problem on this mission.
His mind immediately began to draw up scenarios whereby he could eliminate the Cadet, the Commander and also apprehend the Hybrid in one swift motion.
He didn’t even notice himself grinning as he set to work on the device.
OOC: I am just reminding you that Jon Marshall is still on board, still an evil man, and still trying to grab the Ee Hybrid by whatever means necessary!
