Mission: Errand of Mercy
Location: Main Sickbay
Timeline: Backpost.

ON:

Doctor Mikail Kolmak walked into sickbay with a PADD in his hands, getting ready to meet the Chief Medical Officer for the first time and to get his shift schedule to start working on USS Redemption. He arrived a few days ago to get settled in his new quarters and has seen the Captain to get a feel of the superior officer's background. Now, he is going to meet with Doctor Afton. He glanced around to see which way is the office and headed straight to it.

Keisha Afton came into sickbay a few moments later with a content look on her face. It was the simple pleasure that being with her child gave to her that the fleet had tried and failed to wrest from her grasp. "Good...Morning" she spoke to the man standing in the center of sickbay outside of her office door. She'd paused to check the chrono to make sure she was giving the proper greetings.

Mikail turned to look at the woman who spoke and was stunned to see her white skin. The term Albinism came to mind and he has never met someone with this disorder. He noted the iris of her eyes were blue like an ocean blue to him. He hid the surprise as he barely glanced down at her, three inches shorter than him, "I'm...," he nearly lost his thoughts, "Doctor Mikail Kolmak." He cleared his throat, "I'm here to see the Chief to get my schedule shifts and to meet with Doctor Afton. I'm starting as Assistant Chief."

"A very good morning then. Nice to meet you Mikail. " She extended one pale hand, to her assistant. While she recognized that look in his eyes, that he'd never seen someone with her condition before, she simply carried on and let him study her. Better to get it all out of his system now. "Keisha Afton."

"Oh," he cleared his throat as he accepted her hand. "Nice to meet you, Doctor Afton." He released her hand immediately.

"I've not read your file. I prefer everyone get a fair chance and sometimes the fit rep interferes. Anything in there about you I need to know about?". She asked quietly, the hint of a smile on her lips.

"Born in Russia on Earth," his Russian accent came out heavy, pausing to lighten it up to make it clear and he continued, "I went to Starfleet Academy for three and half years instead of three, taking surgery elective for six months. Served USS McCoy and Hampton before arriving here. I have an alloy plate in my thoracic spine between T4 and T6 after being attacked on an away team. It was a cracked vertebrae from being hit from behind by the enemy. I don't remember the rest of the detail as I was knocked out. Anyways, I'm fit for duty a year ago after getting healed. I speak four languages, I hate Klingon food and I'm compassionate in my work," he smiled and handed the PADD to her that contain his information.

Keisha nodded slowly, a hint of a smile on her lips. "So you're a qualified surgeon as well? That's good to know for the roster. What's your specialty?"

"Yes, qualified. Emergency medicine and surgery together...even out on the field." Was that a smile? Should I be relaxed here? He pondered on her personality. He knew that some people can be unpredictable and it makes things of not being sure of. He respects those with ranks above him and those who are honest. "You need a surgeon? I still like to be a regular physician taking care of injuries and illnesses."

"I am happy to have a trained surgeon, especially one trained in trauma. I won't keep you from regular rotations, but I would ask that you aid me in getting the rest of the physicians on the ship- including myself up to date with their Emergency qualifications."

"Much obliged...yes," he gave a short smile.

"Very good." Her shoulders seemed to drop their tension and her smile became more visible. "We've had a hard road on this ship, which is part of why I wear Marine green instead of Starfleet Medical blue. But we're a good team and we're happy to have you. What shift do you prefer?"

"Thank you. I prefer the evening or the night shift," he answered.

"Noted. Anything I should know about you, or that you want to know about me?" she asked softly her fingers coming to rest upon her lips.

Mikail paused to glance around sickbay before putting his eyes back on her. He shook his head lightly, "Not much else about myself. I have never known a Marine in charge of Sickbay - which came first? Started out as a physician or marine trained physician?"

"I started out in Starfleet, went through the Academy Medical school and served with pride for 22 years I only transferred to the Marine unit at the beginning of this mission." her tone indicated that there was much much more to that story that she was leaving out.

"Must be useful to the Marines to have a doctor on board," he paused. "I like to spend time in the holodeck after shift doing marital arts to keep up with exercises, if I were to join the away team. Forgive me to ask, where are you from? I assume you are not from earth?"

"Peace brother, no forgiveness is needed. I am human, but you are correct not from Earth. I was born on Amarind Colony." She smiled softly. "My clan thought me startouched, because of my skin and I was accorded much freedom."

"On earth, seeing the loss of skin pigment is Albinism. Never been to Amarind Colony," he smiled. "I haven't been out much, so I'm not familiar with billions of planets and colonies out there. It is good to get experience meeting new people of all races, knowing that you are not the only one in the universe." He eyed the main sickbay, "shall I have a tour? I sure don't want to be clueless when I start my duties," he chuckled.

"Amarind was a colony world at one point, by what were called the native Americans. We call ourselves the People. Albinism is extremely rare. ". She chuckled and gestured "let's get you a tour, and introduced to the staff."

Mikail nodded, understanding the situation of her culture and her world. "I'm ready to meet the staff." He moved aside to let her lead.

"Excellent" she led the way out of the office, to introduce him to everyone.
