950 words; about a 5 minute read
Mission:
Errand of Mercy
Location: Main Engineering
Timeline: ED - 2 11:30

Joran couldn't believe the size of the Redemption. Damned ship was MASSIVE. Over 1,200 meters long, better than 500 meters wide, and 52 decks. And as for the engineering department--HIS engineering department--it measured up to what he had seen so far of the rest of the ship. It was impressive. When he had served on the Deimos, he was one of twelve engineers. On the Redemption, it appeared from the roster that he had about fifty engineers of various specialties serving under him.
He had yet to see his quarters as he had come directly here from his meeting with the captain, but if they were commensurate with everything else he had seen, he figured they would be more than adequate. He had taken a quick turn through the department to see what was going on, and he had been favorable impressed by what he had seen, but he also knew he needed to check everything out by a more in-depth examination. He would do that, but first he wanted to check out the roster. It would be nice to know exactly who he would be working with.
He then sat down at hs desk and activated the computer terminal, his intention being to find the best candidate to be his Assistant Chief Engineer.
====== One hour later ======
After reading through all forty-six files pertaining to his engineers, he had pared his choices down to two: Lieutenant Ch'torrath, an Andorian with a specialty in warp theory; and Lieutenant Daxit, a Betazoid whose specialty was damage control. He would call each of them in for a one-on-one interview and make his determination from there.
So, figuring that there was no time like the present, he called for the first one. =/\= Lieutenant Tahl Ch'torrath, please report to the Chief Engineer's office. =/\=
=/\= Acknowledged...=/\= came the reply.
In just a matter of minutes, his door chime rang. "Enter..." he called out. The door opened to reveal a rather short Andorian male. As best as Alexei could tell, the Andorian was not much taller than himself--excluding his antennae which meant he was shorter than the average Andorian male. As the engineer entered, Alexei stood and walked around his desk with his hand extended. "I'm Commander Alexei Joran, the new chief engineer. Have a seat..." he said, indicating one of the chairs in front of his desk. "May I get you anything from the replicator?" he asked.
"Thank you, no..." Lieutenant Ch'torrath answered. "Very well," Joran said as he sat down behind his desk once again. "I'll come directly to the point, then. I'm looking for an assistant Chief Engineer and you're on my short list of candidates. That is, provided you are even interested in the position.
"I am definitely interested," Ch'torrath said quickly.
"In that case, let me begin by asking you a few questions," Alexei begain. "First of all, why don't you tell me about..."
====== Thirty minutes later ======
As the interview ended, Alexei again shook the man's hand. "Thank you Mister Ch'torrath for coming in. I still have another candidate to interview, but I will be making a decision soon and once I do, I will let you know."
"Aye sir--and thank you for the consideration," Ch'torrath said, then turned and walked out of the office.
"On to the next one..." Joran muttered as he reached up and tapped his combadge. =/\= Lieutenant Kerre Daxit, " he called, =/\= Please report to the Chief Engineer's office. =/\=
=/\= On my way...=/\= came a decidedly cheery and definitely female voice.
Once again, in a matter of minutes, his office door chime rang.
"Enter..." he called out. The door opened to reveal a statuesque, raven-haired Betazoid female. As soon as the door opened she strode quickly into the office, then stopped and looked at Alexei. "Who are you?" she asked, the curiosity evident in her voice. To Joran, she looked to be fresh out of the academy, but after having read her bio, he knew she had been in Starfleet for over ten years.
"I'm Commander Alexei Joran," he said quickly. "Your new Chief Engineer."
"I'm Lieutenant Kerre..." she broke off then gave him a rather embarrassed grin. "Uh...I guess you already know who I am since you called me.
"Yeah that WOULD be the case," Joran answered with a chuckle. "Please, have a seat. May I get you anything from the replicator?"
"Yes, Tarkalean Tea, please. -4C," she answered, taking the nearest chair. Alexei retrieved her drink from the replicator and handed it to her. "The reason I've called you here is that you're on my short list for possible promotion to Assistant CEO," he said.
"Why?" she asked simply. "I don't think I'm that spectacular."
"Your service record would seem to say otherwise," Joran answered. "I see that your specialty is damage control. "Let me give you a specific situation and you tell me how you would handle it, please. We're in the middle of battle, and you have a complete failure of the..."
====== Approximately 20 minutes later ======
"I'd say we're about done here, Lieutenant..." Joran said as he stood to signal the end of the interview. "As I told the other candidate, I will be making a decision soon and I will let you know.
"Yes, sir..." she said as she stood and smoothed her uniform. Giving him what he saw as a very warm smile, she turned and headed back into main engineering. But just before walking out the door, she looked back and gave him a slow wink.
Joran took his seat back behind his desk. He knew that the easiest part was over. Now it was time for the difficult part--deciding who should get the position.
