262 words; about a 1 minute read

Mission: Errand of Mercy
Location: Dark Star

I watched you die that day. I held you in my arms, squeezed you tightly and looked deep into your dark brown eyes as you took your last breath. I could feel you, I could feel your emotions, I could see your thoughts as if they were as real as the gunfire around me. We always had a special connection, a bond that could not be replicated by science in a laboratory. You spoke to me, you spoke to me with in a language transcendent of this universe. You looked me in the eye, and then you were gone. I knew you were gone because I felt a part of myself leave with you.

Seeing you in that picture with him, I know that's not you. That is not your smile. Those are not your eyes. The person in that picture may share your features but she is no more then a shade, a vile temptress who would attempt to fool me into falling for her. How crass she is, how arrogant. Her downfall will be that she does not understand the connection we had, our connection was not synthetic. It will not be easy to destroy you, but it must be done.

But...

What if it is you? What if in the heat of the moment, the sight of your apparent demise compromised my emotional state. What if what I felt was only an illusion, a phantom pain? Why would you leave? Why would you join him?

Perhaps you really did die that day, are you just a shade?
