780 words; about a 4 minute read
Mission:
Errand of Mercy
Location: Secondary Sickbay
Timeline: ED 8 0730
ON:
Micheal Reeves began his shift in the secondary sickbay alone, which appeared to be empty at the moment without patients. In the office, he filled out the break-in report of the medical lab and sent the report to the Chief Security Officer, Lieutenant-Commander Doyl. A gorgeous and a fine woman. She is way older than me, he nodded at himself. He was embarrassed by not controlling his hormones in the main sickbay, staring at the Chief of Security longer than he has ever done. He assumed that Nurse Grey must have picked up his behavior while monitoring his vitals. What an embarrassment. He pushed his thoughts away, reminding himself that he needs to find someone near his age. Get a grip, Reeves, using the same thoughts of how his mother said it.
After he completed the full report, he went into the main room to start adding the sterilized equipment on a few trays by the empty biobed.
As soon as he was finished with the routine work like every shift, he went to the replicator to order a cup of coffee, adding caffeine, a stimulating drug, to help him with his energy levels. The problem was the quietness that loomed in the room. My serotonin levels must be dropping, he figured, feeling too relaxed. I love coffee just like my parents.
Mister Reeves was about to take the hot cup into the office when he heard a door opened and closed. Great. He placed the cup on the desk and walked back out to see who or what it is. Seeing a desperate young woman wringing her hands looking for something or someone, he went straight to her. "Can I help you?"
She gave him a nervous smile. "Is Doctor Kolmak here?"
Another Russian accent? "He is in the main sickbay taking care of several patients at the moment. Is there something I can help you with?"
"I've been having stronger headaches. I just need something to take for it," she said with worry. This must be a bad idea. This man is not a doctor, she thought.
"Okay. Come sit over here and let me do a short scan," he patted the biobed, then picked up a closed tricorder and opened it. As he waited for her to get settled, he asked, "Your name?"
"Tanya Petrovna." She preferred not to lay down but sit upright.
The silence lasted a minute until the instrument beeped in his hand. He read it. "Blood pressure is high," he said, putting away the instrument. He picked up a PADD to read her medical file. "It looks higher than three days ago. We should do a scan of your artificial kidney..."
She slid off the bed, shaking her head. "No...no. I'm not going through that again. Nevermind the need for me here."
"Whoa," he put his hands in the air. "I'm just trying to help you, ma'am. I'll give you something for the headache. Did Doctor Kolmak give you something for your blood pressure?"
Tanya turned and sighed, rubbing her forehead. "No."
"To be on the safe side, I have an idea as I can't prescribe medication for the blood pressure," he went to a cabinet, pulled out two tin cans and handed it to her. "Burdock Root and Cardamom. Mix these two in one cup of tea. It's been known to help remove toxins if your kidney is sluggish and slow. It should help bring the blood pressure down. I know little about herbs from a friend of mine."
She was surprised at using herbs.
Micheal picked up a hypospray and replaced the empty vial with a full vial of an analgesic. "This is for the headache," he touched her neck. "Come back in a day or two to catch Doctor Kolmak. We do need to keep an eye on the blood pressure." He replaced the instrument and entered the information into her medical file.
"Thank you...?"
"Name is Micheal Reeves. I'm a nurse assistant/medical tech," he smiled. She is cute, but not my type, he assessed. "Are you Russian? You seem to have the same accent as Kolmak."
"No...close. Ukrainian. Thank you for this," she waved the tin cans.
"No problem." He watched her leave sickbay. Then, he realized he forgot about his coffee in the office and shrugged. Nevermind the need of it as it must be cold already. My energy is back.
