Long Time Friend Call

516 words; about a 3 minute read
Mission:
Errand of Mercy
Location: Secondary Sickbay
Timeline: ED 5, 2325
ON:
Twenty minutes ago, he watched Tanya Petrovna leave sickbay after he completed a physical exam on her. The smile that she returned to him gave his heart an extra beat. A nice lady. We came from almost the same country on Earth, he smiled.
He was sitting down in his office during night shift. Turning his attention to the PADD he's been holding, Mikail looked over her medical information to make sure he didn't leave anything out. He sent the limited work orders to the Captain. As soon as the paperwork on her is completed, he leaned back in his chair doing some thinking about getting a kidney put into her.
A chime on his laptop broke his thoughts.
"Computer?"
"You have a call from John DeVorn."
"Put him through," the doctor said, sitting straight forward.
On the screen, a federation background switched to a man's face with a little extra weight.
"John! How are you doing?"
A smile displayed on the man's face. "Mikail, you old coot. Oh, I'm fine. What about you, friend?"
Mikail's memory of him trying to save him during the mission on planet Esmertas, where they became buddies for life. They were the only two that survived the attack by the terrible insects called the Emers. "So far, so good. Still some pain but it is nothing I can't manage." Noticing an extra rank pin on his lapel, "did you just get a promotion?"
"Oh yes! Almost forgot to mention that...Lieutenant Junior Grade," he smiled proudly. "Still flight control officer."
"Congrats, John. I'm happy for you, buddy. How's everybody on Hampton?"
"Same old, same old. They still think about you. They are sadden by the lost of the other crewmembers, still. I don't talk about it much but they do. I sometimes have nightmares about it," he shook his head.
"I have it, too. Have you seen a counselor for it?"
"Just once. The Captain wanted to make sure I was mentally stable or something before piloting a shuttle and go off the deep end," John chuckled. "I'm not suicidal."
Mikail slightly laughed. "I haven't seen a counselor, yet. After being new to this ship, I've been very busy. Just my superiors know about the incident. The alloy plate they put in my back is still an irritation, but they fixed it for now." Many times the pain, he thought.
"Any new research where they could give you new parts to replace the whatever you call it in the spine?"
"Intervertebral discs - missing two. I will have to look into it later," Doctor Kolmak said.
"Ah, I see. I have to get going...bedtime. My shift starts early in the morning. It's so good to talk to you, Mikail."
"Poka, John."
Remembering the Russian word for good-bye, John smiled. "Poka, Mikail. Take care of yourself, man. Until next time."
The transmission ended.
